What is the College Writing Exam (CWE)?

The CWE is a two-part exam that all students are required to take to be eligible to graduate from SUNY Oneonta.

Frequently Asked Questions About the CWE

Q: At what point in my college career should I take the CWE?
A: The ideal time to take the exam is during the second semester of the sophomore year.

Q:

How do I register for the CWE?
A: Registration for the CWE is done through Tracktion, our online scheduling service. When you're ready to schedule your appointment to take the exam, please go to http://tracktion.oneonta.edu and click "CWE Signup or Cancel." Be sure to fill in all your information. If you need to cancel your appointment, please return to this site to do so.
Q: I'm nervous about the grammar portion of the exam.  How can I study for that?
A: Grammar is important on both parts of the exam.  Those assessing the writing look at whether it is unified, coherent, developed, but they also are noting whether the writer has demonstrated good command of grammar, punctuation, word choice, and syntax.  If you have concerns, we recommend brushing up on a set of skills we call the "Killer Errors."  Check out the University of Wisconsin at Madison's website on these skills.
Q: How do I find out my score?
A: Your results will be mailed to the address you provided on the form.  If you are taking the exam within six weeks of the end of the semester, then, be sure to provide us with a home address.
Q: How long should it take for me to get my results back?
A: Grading the exams takes approximately 4-6 weeks.
Q: I usually do all my writing on a computer. It will be hard for me to write out an entire essay. Can I type my CWE?
A: Computer-based tests will be given in our labs in Alumni Hall.  You must register in advance for a spot in the group computer CWE administration.  Dates for computer administrations are listed on Tracktion. When you're ready to schedule your appointment to take the exam, please go to http://tracktion.oneonta.edu and click "CWE Signup or Cancel." Be sure to fill in all your information. If you need to cancel your appointment, please return to this site to do so.
